This weekend is the return of Volksfling, Scotland's biggest VW festival. We took Boris, our 1971 Beetle to their Mk2 festival last August, and we were keen to return to the bigger May show.
Well, we survived our night wild camping by Loch Venacher, although it seems the rain was too much for some of the tent campers as they up and left during the night! To be honest, I would probably have joined them if we had been under canvas, it was cold and wet. We were tucked up cosy with water on tap, though, so no hardships for us!
We left quite sharp and headed onto Callendar, where I haven't been for years. We parked up at McLaren Leisure Centre, just out of town and had walk into the main street for a look round the shops and have a coffee. Then we grabbed some takeaway sandwiches from Deli Ecosse and went down to the riverside to munch them. We're just back from an overnight stay of 'wild camping'. I'm using the inverted commas because, quite frankly, there was nothing wild nor camping about it! For me, wild camping suggests roughing it in the mountains with only the things you can carry in your rucksack. It isn't setting up in a car park with 2 other motorhomes beside you, which is what we did.
But anyhow, wild camping is the phrase used when you park up for the night anywhere that isn't a recognised campsite. For us, it was a small layby on the banks of Loch Venacher near Callendar. It looked lovely on Google Earth when Tommy did some research, and it was a beautiful spot, but sadly we got there after two other motorhomes had nabbed the best spots, and there were a few tents and cars there too. We were lucky to get the space we did. On our last morning of our stay at Landis Farm CL, Sandra the owner took the Tornado Twins off with her children to explore the farm. They let the chickens out the coop and checked for eggs, met the calves in the byre and got to cuddle the rabbits. The girls had an absolute ball and I can't speak highly enough of this wonderful CL and its fabulous owners. We even got some eggs for our breakfast!
