While I'm writing up our latest tour round Europe, Tommy has been busy putting together this fab film of our trip. So many great memories! Some places you visit and you're slightly underwhelmed. Not so Xanten! So much to see, we barely scratched the surface!
Koblenz felt like an oasis of comfort after several days without electricity and no fridge!
We left Austria still smarting from the 53 euros a night we were paying in Salzburg. After spending the last 10 nights in proper (expensive) sites, we were on the look out for something cheap and cheerful. A quick look in the Bord Atlas showed us a site on the lake of Chiemsee in Germany. It was right on the waterside and was only 15 euros a night. Result!
Salzburg was a city that Tommy and I were really looking forward to seeing. We had been blown away by Innsbruck last year and we expected Salzburg to be just as good.
We were looking forward to Dresden and it didn't disappoint. There's a stellplatz in the city centre just a few minutes walk from the old town, although it's not the cheapest at 17 euros a night (that includes electricity). The location more than makes up for it, though. Dresden has an Umwelt (congestion) zone, however motorhomes are allowed to enter the city centre, probably because this great stellplatz brings in a significant revenue for local businesses. It was packed!
To avoid the Umwelt (congestion) zone of Berlin, we stopped at Marina Lanke, just outside the town of Spandau. From the site, it was a quick walk to the main road, where we could get a bus and then a train into the centre of Berlin. It sounds like a bit of a pain, and I was dreading the trailing about, but in reality it was quick and easy. Good old German efficiency! It was cheap too - we bought travel passes at the site for less than 40 euros, which covered us for 48 hours of travel on any transport system - bus, train, underground and tram!
Wolfsburg is the home of Volkswagen. Our Beetle, Boris, was built here in 1971. After the VW wonder that was HO17, it made sense to continue the theme with a trip to the Autostadt.
