Once back on the mainland, we still had one night left of our holiday. The sun was shining brightly between torrential downpours (welcome to Scotland!) and we enjoyed a great drive down towards Fort William.
As we motored along, we noticed puffs of cloud in the distance and at first thought they were weird clouds (potential meteorologists, the lot of us). Then we realised it was smoke and smoke from only one thing - a steam train. Not just any steam train, but it only one that matters. The Hogwarts Express. I nearly wet myself with excitement, the girl were glued to the windows and Tommy was driving as quickly and as safely as he could to get us to the Glenfinnan Viaduct before the train. And guess what. We made it! We sailed into Uig bay from Harris just after lunchtime. The sun was out, but only just. The storm clouds were gathering.
Our original plans for seeing Stornoway was a visit passing through as we returned to Harris. As things panned out, we ended up there for three nights! After nearly four full days in the wilderness, we all felt we needed a bit of human interaction (never thought I'd say that!) and some retail therapy that wasn't of the food variety.
We were staying at Laxdale Holiday Park, which was as far removed from our previous sites as could be possible. We had neighbours on either side and no view to speak of, but there were showers, a washing machine and wifi, so as far as I was concerned, it had everything we needed. It was our most expensive site of the whole trip, weighing in at a mighty £25 a night, but the twenty minutes walk into Stornoway town centre more than justified that for us. |
