One of Tommy's favourite places is Watergate Bay, north of Newquay. We visited many years ago, prior to having the Tornado Twins and we always wanted to return. We had booked two nights at the Camping and Caravan Club Tregurrian site and after we'd pitched up, we walked down the cliff path into the bay, where the girls had a play on the beach before we had a light dinner at the Phoenix Inn over looking the bay.
After a good night's sleep at Hollins Green, we set off again, ready to do battle with the M6 around Birmingham. In reality, that part was fine. It was the Glastonbury traffic and an accident on the M5 that delayed us for an hour and a half.
Hot and tired, we finally rolled into Burrowhayes Campsite near Porlock a mere 7 hours after we had set off. Burrowhayes is a 25 minute form Porlock and its infamous 20% gradient - not for the faint hearted! It's also close to Minehead and Exmoor National Park. For £23 a night, it has good hot showers, lots of open space and a riding school next door. Just make sure you ask for a pitch on the back field or you may find yourself with a bit of a slope to level out on. We had a quick dinner and then a shower, as we were expecting visitors - my sister and her family, who live nearby and who have recently bought themselves a VW California. It wasn't long before they arrived and the four cousins were immediately best friends again. We had two pitches together, so we set up a communal area and chilled out. On Thursday we set off on our 2015 grand tour. The Hebrides last year will be hard to beat, but we're heading south this time to Cornwall. It was a long drive for an 18 year old van and his passengers, so we split the journey up.
First stop was near Sandbach, in Cheshire. We made the most of our Caravan Club membership and stayed on a CL called Hollins Green Farm. We were pleased to find a nice level field for a quick and easy pitch. The owners were lovely too, and even the neighbouring cows were well behaved. Worth checking out if you need to stay in the area, just £10 for a night, including electrical hookup. Just £10 for a night including electrical hookup. |
