Anyone that knows us will know that Gartfairn CL near Balmaha is one of our favourite sites to visit. We're here at least twice a year. SO there's not much to add to this post apart from some photos! Enjoy x
It's my birthday! Well, nearly. To celebrate, we grabbed the chance of a dry weekend and headed to Sandyhills in Dumfries and Galloway for a long weekend.
The girls go back to school soon, after a VERY long time thanks to Covid, so we grabbed one last chance to get away this summer and took a 2 night trip to Kilmelford in Argyll and Bute.
For me, Applecross and Torridon were the absolute highlight of the NC500. The whole route is stunning but we definitely saved the best for last. I've seen a lot of Scotland, having lived here all my life, but this area is just something else.
After a few days in Ullapool, we were ready to set off again on the NC500. Our destination was Gairloch, an area famous for its beautiful coastline... and midges!
Heading south from Durness, heading for Ullapool, we passed though some stunning scenery. It's no wonder that the NC500 is such a popular driving route and the walking in this area is world famous too.
The route from John O'Groats to Durness is a gorgeous drive. There are loads of beautiful little coves and beaches just begging to be explored, and we marked down a few for future adventures.
The road becomes single track at Bettyhill, so we had plenty of opportunities to pull over to allow faster moving traffic to pass and admire the views. Ard Neakie on Loch Eriboll is a classic viewpoint and Tommy couldn't resist a quick snap. Pushing on north through Sunday morning, we arrived at John O'Groats in the early afternoon, just in time for this perfect shot at the signpost. It's not often this quiet, especially at the weekend.
Somewhere between Fort William and Inverness, we made the decision to give the North Coast 500 a go. We'd considered it previously for a holiday, but had been put off by the stories of busy roads and an over abundance of motorhomes in convoy. Our plan had been to do it at a less congested time (ie NOT in July or August!) but research online was showing that the route was quieter this year then previous years, so while Tommy drove us up the A82 and A9, I booked a campsite near John O'Groats for our next stop after Brora.
Before we could settle in at Brora though, we had to squeeze through this narrow little railway bridge. Breath in! |
