When we were initially planning our 2017 trip, Tommy casually mentioned that there was a VW event that he wanted to see. Funnily enough, our ferry tickets and planned route all seemed to fit in with it. Isn't that strange! What neither of us realised was how special this event actually is. Every four years, the town of Hessisch Oldendorf is entirely taken over by pre-1969 VW vehicles. Every possible type you can imagine, lining street after street in a glorious riot of colour and noise. We just assumed it ran every year, and it was only through talking with others that we found out it was only on every four years. People and their cars had travelled from all over the world to be there for this weekend. We felt so fortunate that it had fit in with our plans so neatly. The quality and sheer number of vehicles was simple outstanding. Any one street would have been a mini festival in its own right anywhere else. Tommy actually said that we've now ruined it for ourselves if we ever visit another VW festival - after this, nothing else will ever match up! If you fancy checking it out yourself one day, the next event is in 2021. You won't be disappointed. Read more about our motorhome travels in Germany.
