Hoorn was the last stopping point of our 2017 tour and one we were looking forward too. We'd heard great reports of the historic harbour and town. There's a great stellplatz at the marina that we parked up at for £17 a night, and from there it was an easy stroll into the centre. The boats in the harbour are spectacular, it was fascinating to see them moored up and looking for well cared for. The buildings in the town are amazing too, some of them appear to defy logic as they lean forward, backwards and sideways - sometimes all at once! We spent an enjoyable two nights in Hoorn before heading to the port at IJmuiden. On the way, with a few hours to spare, we stopped off at Zaanse Schans, where windmills fill the horizon. A camper can park for the day for 10 euros, but the site is free to explore after that. If you want to visit any windmills, it costs around 4 euros per adult. Honestly, it was so busy while we were there that I'd recommend visiting other windmills if you want to see inside one. The crowds by the entrance were almost unbearable but calmed down once we moved along the site. It's a very beautiful place, but obviously a top attraction for bus and coach tours, so be warned! Then it was on to the port, where we boarded without a problem, managed to secure another cabin upgrade (this time due to a smelly carpet) and sailed home. Another amazing adventure of the Regan family. Read more about our travels in the Netherlands.
