Friday was a big travel day for us - we'd changed our plans slightly and were travelling straight to Uig Sands on Lewis, rather than stopping overnight at Horgabost on Harris. There was method to the madness - the original plan had been one night on Harris, four on Lewis then back to Harris for another night before travelling from Tarbert to Skye. When you look at the map, it makes more sense! Anyhoo, we decided to start with our four days on Lewis then have two consecutive days on Harris - but first we had to get there. We left North Uist in more sunshine with fantastic views over some glorious landscapes to St Kilda in the distance. We also had to replace our Calor gas canister and stock up on supplies, as our Lewis stop offs were more than a little remote. Then we were over the causeway to Berneray, where a ferry would transport us to Harris. Berneray looked beautiful, with an amazing beach sweeping up the west coast, but sadly we were short of time after our stop offs and could go no further than the ferry terminal. The ferry across the Sound of Harris looks like it should be fairly short, but sand banks and rocky islands force the boat on a drunken winding route that gives plenty opportunity to admire Berneray and to spot the local seals. Once on Harris, we stopped at the fuel station in Levenburgh for diesel (our first since Oban), then continued, in search of South Harris' famous beaches. This was the first glimpse we got: Swiftly followed by these beauties: As we'd left North Uist, I had commented to Tommy that the beaches on Harris would have to be amazing to beat the beaches on North Uist, which were simply stunning. To be honest, these is no comparison - the elevation of the road and the colours of the water make these beaches in another league all together. Sorry North Uist! We reluctantly drove on, having already changed our plans and headed for Lewis. The north of Harris is very mountainous and required some steady driving from Tommy as we scaled some serious heights. Some of the downhill turns had me on the edge of my seat! We had some 50 miles to cover so it was a while before we arrived at our planned stop at Uig Sands. But it was certainly worth it - how's this for a dinnertime view? Read more about our tour of the Outer Hebrides.
