On arriving on North Uist, the rain that had plagued us up the 'long island' had cleared and the sun was beginning to make an appearance again. We seemed to be very fortunate with the weather so far. We stocked up on supplies at the Bayhead Community Shop before heading to our next campsite, Balranald Hebridean Holidays. Balranald is well known as a RSPB reserve, where rare corncrakes have found a safe haven to breed. It's also known from its otters and wading birds, of which we saw very little, due to have the Tornado Twins with us. But the sun was now out and we were still having fun exploring the reserve and its spectacular beaches. Tommy's pictures do much more justice than mine ever could. The site itself is on the machair (dunes meadow), tucked in behind the amazing beach shown above. It's well equipped with showers (£1 a go), a washing machine that we made good use of and there's a little catering van which provides coffee, sandwiches and even lobsters to visiting bird hunters and campers alike. The RSPB visitor centre is a few minutes walk away and provides lots of information about wildlife in the area, as well as a few games and puzzles that the girls soon tore into. We thought we'd lucked out on the weather at Kilbride on South Uist, but the following day we were blessed with another corker of a day. Water pistols were deployed and soon the girls had us down on the sand where we were quickly paddling in warm water and having a ball. It wasn't long before the girls were stripped to their pants and dunking each other. We couldn't have had a more perfect day, even the solar shower was hot enough for hosing down the children!
