We love New Year here at Wandering Hans HQ. We had a lovely Christmas with the family, the Tornado Twins got spoiled rotten. But New Year is a great chance for the four of us to get away. Can you guess where we went? I guess the title gives it away - we headed east to Northumberland and the lovely town of Seahouses, just down the coast from the impressive Bamburgh Castle. Our original plans as been to head up the west coast to the island of Luing, where Tommy has a friend who stays there. He had kindly offered his driveway to us as a temporary campsite so we could spend New Year on the island. But the weather forecast was turning nasty for the west, so we sadly had to change our plans. The east coast, by comparison, was looking rather lovely, so we found a campsite that was open - Springhill Farm just outside Seahouses - and got booked in. We arrived mid afternoon and after a quick set up (we're getting good at that) we headed straight into Seahouses for a look round. Springhill Farm is about a mile outside Seahouses, so well placed for a motorhome holiday. It didn't take us long to reach the shore, where massive waves were being dashed onto the beach and around the harbour. We had to be careful not to get a soaking! But the temperature was surprisingly mild, so we took our time wandering around, and headed back to camp in the dark. Next morning, we broke out the scooters, intending to scoot to Bamburgh Castle for the day. But the temperature had dropped considerably and that, along with a damp mist, had us turning about face and heading for Seahouses again. We had a coffee and mossied round the shops - anyone visiting Seahouses has to take a visit to Farne Gifts - an emporium of goodies to suit everyone! Fuses, paintings, soft toys, wellies, mops, postcards, jewellery - if they don't sell it, you don't need it! We bought a few bits and pieces for the girls to keep them busy when the weather was predicted to turn a bit nasty later in the week. There's nothing worse than Tornados with cabin fever. The next morning broke blue and clear - and much warmer. Scooters at the ready, we set off for Bamburgh Castle, a mere 3 miles away via country lanes. It was great fun, and a much nicer day for the journey, as you can see from the pictures below. If you ever get a chance to visit Bamburgh, the castle is worth visiting, as is the amazing beach that it sits above. Even exploring the dunes between them is an adventure in itself. The ride home was tiring but fun and we were all ready for a good sleep when we got back. Unfortunately, Storm Frank was brewing in the west and the wind was picking up... We love getting away in the winter holidays. See where else we've been.
