This morning we set off on our great adventure. Our ferry to Castlebay in Barra left at 1540, so, after a thankfully uneventful journey up, we arrived in Oban at lunchtime. We had plenty time to get organised, checked in and fed some lunch, which was lucky as it was amazing where the time disappeared to just getting our tickets sorted and getting Hans into the ferry queue. After some scran at the new Wetherspoons on Oban harbour (quick, cheap and cheerful!), we headed back to Hans and were soon directed on board the MV Clansman. There was everything you would need on the boat - apart from Jack and Victor, that is - an observation lounge, a bar, seating out on the deck, a restaurant (might want to mortgage the house before eating there, though!), and a TV lounge, where you could watch Greg Rutherford at the athletics and still keep the sick bags handy. Nice. With a sailing time of 4 hours and 50 minutes, there was plenty of time to look round before settling into a comfy corner. We'd taken games and the obligitory iPads as entertainment for the girls, but to be honest, they were happiest outside, watching the world go by and spotting the local wildlife. By 8pm we were approaching Barra and had a lovely sail into the harbour. Kisimul Castle looked lovely in the evening light and the girls were excited to be visiting the next day. Then before we knew it, we were docked and heading ashore. After such a long drive in the morning and the long sail, we were pleased we only had a short 2 mile drive to Borve campsite where we were booked in for two nights. We received a warm welcome from Donald, the owner, and found he had a pitch organised for us right in the waterside. There's perks to booking well in advance, he reserves waterside pitches for those who call in advance. The campsite was small but perfectly formed, with a new facilities block that included good hot showers and loads of local information. We settled ourselves in and managed to stay up long enough (just!) to enjoy the sunset then headed for bed. Busy day tomorrow! Edit: My camera pictures seem to be very dull and poor quality - hope it doesn't detract from the story too much! Read more about our travels in the Outer Hebrides.
