When we woke up, our plan had been to head to Wales, where we had yet to venture in a motorhome. I was quite excited by the prospect of castles and wild camping, but when we looked at the long range weather forecast, it was meant to rain for the next week. Instead then, we looked to where it would be sunny and headed east to Oxford. Tommy thinks he'd been before, back in his rock'n'roll band days - probably a student union somewhere. I'd never visited and I was quite excited by the prospect. Brideshead Revisited is one of my favourite books and I was keen to look around the city. After 3 nights using only Bodhi's shower facilities, and with the weather being quite warm, we booked into the Oxford Camping and Caravan Club site. I won't tell you how much it cost, but it was very, very expensive and totally not worth it. The shower block is very tired and smelly and the site is not motorhome friendly at all. But we could walk into the city, which is why we chose it. Not recommended though. We walked into Oxford, which is a lovely route through parks, along the river and suburban streets. We knew we were getting close when the crowds started thicker. I've never seen hoards of tourists like it, except in Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic. Masses of people following tour guides or waiting for tours to start, cluttering up pavements and generally making it difficult to get anywhere. And yes, I'm aware that we're also tourists but there's only 4 of us, not 50! We hit the side streets in an effort to avoid the crowds and struck lucky. There's lots of beautiful architecture and places to see, and not just the obvious stuff. The next day we were a bit more structured in our sightseeing and visited the Oxford Museum of Natural History, the Pit Rivers Museum and the Ashmolean. All very different and all worth a visit. So where next on our magical mystery tour? Well, we're quite close to London so... Old cities and towns are great for exploring.
