It's always the way, isn't it. The schools are off for the holiday weekend, Tommy is off too... And I'm working 4 out of the 5 days. Typical. It was also Volksfling weekend. Tommy was not a happy boy! With only 1 full day to enjoy, Tommy set about organising us with military precision. A few phone calls to Biggar Caravan Site secured us a cancelled pitch and so when I finished work on Saturday, I found Hans waiting for me in the Staff car park. As we set off from Balloch, we became very glad we were heading away from Loch Lomond, as the traffic heading north was queuing back for miles. We were flying along! We made it to Biggar in excellent time, as the roads were amazingly quiet on the way down. It wasn't long before we were parking up in what we have decided is the weirdest campsite in the world. Caravans parked up with potted plants outside, terraces made out of pallets and leather suites inside awnings. So bizarre. It is quite pretty in places though! After the quickest set up ever, we headed for Volksfling before the gates closed. Sadly most of the fun was over by the time we arrived, but there was still lots to see and the all important bouncy castle was still in operation - just! We had a good look round before having a few drinks and a hotdog. Tommy was a happy boy again. The walk back to Hans was almost too much for our Tornado Twins and Tommy had to lend a helping hand to get them along the road. As if they're ever tired! We had a lovely peaceful sleep at our campsite, and after allowing the girls a mammoth play in the site play park, we set off for our next stop - the Falkirk Wheel. Tommy used Google Maps to take us across country and it didn't put a foot wrong. We arrived at the Wheel at around 1, after a journey of about 80 minutes. We parked up in the coach park, which definitely has the best view. You can actually stay overnight here for £10 a night. There's a water supply too and the gates are secured overnight. Definitely worth thinking about for again! We had arrived on the weekend that the Wheel celebrated its 13th birthday and the site was busy. We grabbed a quick bowl of soup in the cafe, then had a close up view of the Wheel in action. For those of you unfamiliar with the Falkirk Wheel, you're maybe wondering what on earth it is! Quite simply, it's a boat lift, joining up the Forth and Clyde canal to the Union canal in one easy step. It seems an odd choice for a tourist attraction, but with so much to do around it, it really makes a good day out. You can take a trip in the Wheel itself, go for a walk or a cycle along the canals, or have fun of the play park, interactive water zone and water play park. Can you guess what we did? Slightly damp and very happy, we finally managed to get the girls back to Hans so we could head home. But we'll back in the summer, armed with a change of clothes and a pile of towels. Once home, the excitement wasn't over as we headed out for a walk so I could test out my new wheels - my Micro Scooter Flex! The plan is to extend our walking range when we're away in Hans, without the huge added weight of bikes. What can I say, it's hugely fun and highly recommended. I hope to see more adults on scooters soon! And in case you're wondering why the formatting of the blog is a little different, it's because I've written it all on my phone. It's a trial, so we'll see how it looks! Read more about our Hymer adventures with VWs.
