This Easter, we decided to take a chance on the weather and booked three nights at Milton of Fonab Caravan Park outside Pitlochry. Unfortunately it ended up a bit wet and windy but we made the most of it anyway. Good Friday was definitely the best day, with lovely sunshine as we drove up the A9 to Pitlochry. We pitched up, grabbed some lunch and then took a walk into the town. The site is around 15 minutes walk from the centre of Pitlochry, so it's well placed for a visit. The girls were fascinated by the Hydro dam and had a good explore around the fish ladder and observation room, where we spotted a tiny salmon fry - Autumn is a much better time for viewing when the fish are heading upstream to spawn. There's a visitor centre currently being built, due to open later this year, so we'll need to return to see that. TT2 is doing a water topic at school and it was great to visit somewhere relevant to her class work. We had a walk around Pitlochry (which we decided was very like Callendar) then we walked back to Hans via the suspension bridge. Between the dam, suspension bridge and the road bridge near the caravan site, you can walk a figure of 8 loop and take in all the sights. Saturday was very wet, but we didn't let it stop us. Boots on and umbrellas up, we walked to Atholl Palace, a nearby hotel, and looked around the gardens there. There's a surprising amount to see and we spent a while there, making the most of the shelter of the trees! After that, we treated ourselves to a well deserved scone at Hettie's tearoom. The heavy rain had made a massive difference to the water levels at the dam and it was a much noisier crossing this time round as we made our way home. Compared with the weather down south, who had a visit from Storm Katie, our Easter Sunday was remarkable pleasant. Before breakfast, there was a surprisingly tricky egg hunt around the inside of Hans (admit it, you're impressed!) then we went out while it was dry for a proper walk. This time, we continued past the dam and headed for the bottom of Loch Faskally before crossing over the water and heading down the other side to Pitlochry. We had initially planned to continue on to Killiecrankie but decided against it as the weather was a bit unpredictable. It was a lovely day, with a nice lunch at Cafe Calluna in the middle to stoke the boilers for the walk home - back the way we came! All in all, a lovely weekend away. Some more sunshine would have been nice but we can't have it all! Spring time is an amazing time to get away in a campervan.
