After leaving our site near Filey, we just had a short run up the coast to Scarborough. We did a quick shop at Lidl before we rolled up at Irton Mount Caravan Site and snagged this amazing pitch. It's a pretty sweet spot, if you don't mind being a few miles out of town. No problem for car drivers but with no bus service nearby, we had a bit of trek into Scarborough. Thankfully, our two little powerhouses were more than up for the job. So we filled them full of lunch and set off to explore. Scarborough is a lot of different things. It really surprised me with the variety of things to do and see. The old town and lovely little harbour, photographed below by Tommy, really surprised me as it was so pretty! The South Bay, with its arcades, fish and chip shops, crowds of people and swooping seagulls were much more what I was expecting. The girls had an absolute ball spending their Dad's money in pointless machines trying to win toys very similar to those they already have at home. The next day (Saturday), we grabbed some lunch in town (nowhere good enough to recommend) and walked down to the Spa. On the way, we stopped in at the Rotunda Museum, which turned out to be a great idea as it was a really interesting and fun little place, packed full of the ancient history of the area. We checked out the Spa, where Tommy was disappointed to find the Sun Court full of plastic patio chairs. He's been hoping to get a picture of the amazing chequered floor and striped deck chairs that he'd seen in other pictures. But it was nice to see and I imagine it's a lovely place to chill in the sunshine with a bit of live music. One of the ways to get about in Scarborough is to jump aboard the 109 Seafront bus. For £8 a day for a family, you can save little legs and travel the two and a quarter miles from the Spa to North Bay all day long on open top buses. There's a few different companies that run buses, but the one you want to use is the East Yorkshire Motor Service (EYMS) with burgundy and cream livery. As well as a 109 bus, they also run the Scarborough Skipper, another open top bus that runs along the seafront but also travels up the hill to the train station and beyond North Bay along to the Sea Life Centre. You can use both routes on your ticket, but only if you buy it from EYMS at the beginning. Top tip! So we jumped on the 109 at the Spa and cruised past South Bay, through the harbour area, around the peninsula below the castle, along North Bay beach and jumped off at the end of the line near Peasholm Park. Peasholm Park is a great place, with a huge boating lake, lots of wildlife, walking trails and Chinese follies. We'd planned a bit of an explore here, but there was an event on and most of the boating pond was closed off, which was a little disappointing. But the girls got to chat to some squirrels, so they were happy. Also at North Bay is the North Bay Railway and the Open Air Theatre, so we had a quick look round there too before taking a walk along the seafront. There's some stunning beach huts at the far end of North Bay and Tommy was in his element. The we jumped onto the Scarborough Skipper and took a tour up to the Sea Life Centre before the bus turned around and headed back to Scarborough train station. We were glad not to be walking back up the hill as we still had several miles to go before we got home Sunday turned out to be a scorcher of a day and we made the most of it. We headed straight for Scarborough Castle at the top of the hill and had a look round. Being Historic Scotland members, we got free entry. The views from the walls and the tower are just lovely, we couldn't have picked a better day. Then we wandered downhill through the Old Town to the Harbour, where SeaFest was taking place. There were boat rides, food stalls and live music but our girls were most interested in the seafood sheds, where they saw lobsters and crabs in tanks, ready for market. Before we knew it, it was getting close to dinner time and we still had to walk home. We covered nearly 50km over our three days in Scarborough and we were done in! No rest for us though, we were moving on the next day for our next stop at Flamingo Land! Yorkshire is a beautiful part of the world.
